#20 Cooper's Hawk

Accipiter cooperii
IUCN Redlist: Least Concern
Location: Victoria, BC, Canada
Time: 1210 PDT April 22 2011

I hope I've got this one right. The most likely other possibility is a sharp-shinned hawk, and I went with Cooper's hawk due to size - this bird was in a tree with a crow, and was very similar in size. According to the wonderful Sibley Field Guide to Birds of Western North America the Cooper's hawk is about the same size as a crow, while the sharp-shinned hawk is noticeably smaller. If you know your raptors, please let me know what you think.

#19 Dark-eyed Junco

Junco hyemalis
IUCN Redlist: Least Concern
Location: Victoria, BC, Canada
Time: 1145 PDT April 22 2011

The dark-eyed junco is a highly variable species, with several subspecies in about 6 groups. This individual is from the Oregon junco subspecies group, easily recognised by the distinct black hood. The infinite well of wisdom that is Wikipedia suggests that it may in the future be recognised as a distinct species.

#18 Turkey Vulture

Cathartes aura
IUCN Redlist: Least Concern
Location: Victoria, BC, Canada
Time: 1100 PDT April 17 2011

Left my camera at home, so of course there's so much wildlife to see - these are from my phone. Here's a blurry shot where you might just make out its red face:

#17 Chestnut-backed chickadee

Poecile rufescens
IUCN Redlist: Least Concern

These are such neat little birds.

And there's that chestnut back

#16 Bewick's Wren

Thryomanes bewickii
IUCN Redlist: Least Concern

I hope this is right - I also got a recording of its song:

#13 Anna's hummingbird

Calypte anna
IUCN Redlist: Least Concern
Location: Victoria, BC, Canada
Time: 1611 PDT April 10 2011

Ah, the frustrations of a point-and-shoot camera. This little guy sat right in front of me for the longest time, but I couldn't get my camera to focus on him. Here's another blurry shot:

#12 Ruby-crowned kinglet

Regulus calendula

#9 Downy Woodpecker

Picoides pubescens
IUCN Redlist: Least Concern
Location: Victoria, BC, Canada
Time: 1552 PDT April 10 2011

Another one I hope I've got right - downy woodpeckers are extremely similar to hairy woodpeckers, distinguished most readily by its smaller bill, and smaller overall size. Although there's no scale to the photo, this bird was tiny.

#8 House Finch

I hope I've got this one right!
